A motor yacht should not be evaluated by model, year and engine hours alone.
Propulsion configuration, machinery history, technical complexity, cruising performance, accommodation and anticipated expenditure determine whether a yacht is suitable for the buyer’s intended use.
The relevant question is not simply whether the asking price is attractive. It is whether the yacht’s condition, systems and operating profile justify the complete acquisition and ownership commitment.
Define the Intended Operating Profile
Before comparing yachts, buyers should establish:
- Intended cruising area and required range
- Typical number of guests
- Owner operation or professional crew
- Preferred cruising speed
- Expected annual use
- Home berth and seasonal location
- Tender, water-toy and storage requirements
Motor-yacht configuration should follow intended use.
Flybridge yachts may suit longer stays and extensive exterior living. Sports cruisers may prioritise performance and day use. Displacement or semi-displacement yachts may better suit buyers focused on range and moderate-speed cruising.
The decision should be based on cruising profile, accommodation, crew, berthing and operating budget—not appearance or maximum speed alone.
Assess Propulsion and Machinery History
Pre-owned motor yachts may use conventional shafts, pod drives such as IPS, sterndrives or other propulsion arrangements.
The propulsion system should be assessed through service history, specialist support, installation condition, manoeuvring requirements and suitability for the intended programme. No system should be selected through reputation alone.
Inspection priorities differ:
- Shaft drives: Engines, gearboxes, shaft alignment, bearings, seals, stern gear and propellers
- Pod drives: Complete propulsion units, seals, steering, electronic controls, corrosion protection and documented servicing
- Sterndrives: Drives, bellows, trim systems, steering components and corrosion protection
For any configuration, the availability of qualified or manufacturer-authorised service support in the intended cruising area is an important ownership consideration.
How Important Are Engine Hours?
Engine and generator hours are relevant but should not be assessed in isolation.
A lower-hour engine may still have suffered from irregular servicing, extended inactivity or unsuitable operation. Higher hours may be acceptable when supported by consistent maintenance, appropriate use and complete records.
Buyers should consider:
- Recorded hours and operating profile
- Service records and supporting invoices
- Cooling and fuel-system maintenance
- Major work or component replacement
- Electronic diagnostic history where available
- Availability of qualified or manufacturer-authorised service support
For significant transactions, the buyer should consider appointing an independent engine specialist in addition to the general marine surveyor.
Depending on the machinery and available evidence, specialist diagnostics may include electronic analysis, operational testing and oil or coolant sampling.
Evaluate Technical Complexity, Layout and Berthing
Stabilisation, generators, air conditioning, hydraulics, platforms, passerelles, watermakers and integrated electronics can materially improve usability.
They also increase technical complexity, maintenance requirements and potential first-year expenditure.
Equipment should be evaluated according to:
- Present condition
- Service history
- Installation quality
- Availability of parts and technical support
- Relevance to the buyer’s intended use
A longer equipment list does not automatically create a better acquisition.
Layout should also be assessed operationally. Helm visibility, side-deck access, mooring arrangements, engine-room accessibility, storage, crew circulation and tender handling can have a greater effect on daily ownership than headline specifications.
The yacht’s length, beam, draft and displacement influence berth availability, marina costs and haul-out options. A yacht that does not suit the intended home berth may create avoidable operational and financial complications.
Verify Performance Through Survey and Sea Trial
Published performance figures provide an initial reference but may not reflect the individual yacht’s current condition, loading or equipment.
Fuel use and range are influenced by hull design, displacement, cruising speed, loading, hull and propeller condition, weather and hotel-system demand.
The buyer should identify the intended cruising speed rather than focusing only on maximum performance.
An independent marine surveyor and relevant specialists should determine the scope of the technical inspection and sea trial. Depending on the yacht, they may assess:
- Engine and propulsion behaviour under load
- Cooling and operating data
- Vibration, steering and manoeuvring
- Stabilisation and generator operation
- Whether recorded performance is broadly consistent with expectations
The survey report should be considered together with service records, diagnostic findings, anticipated expenditure and the agreed price.

Consider VAT and Operating History
A privately used yacht is not automatically preferable to a commercially operated or former-charter yacht.
Private yachts may have lower hours but incomplete maintenance or long periods of inactivity. Commercial yachts may have higher utilisation accompanied by structured servicing and detailed records.
The buyer should evaluate the individual yacht through her condition, operating profile, documentation and price.
VAT status is a separate consideration. A yacht may be offered with EU VAT paid, VAT not paid or VAT status requiring confirmation. This should be assessed through the available evidence and appropriate professional advice.

Compare Total Acquisition Cost
The asking price is only one component of the decision.
A realistic comparison should include:
Purchase price plus transaction expenses plus the expenditure required to bring the yacht to the buyer’s intended standard.
Potential first-year requirements may include machinery servicing, propulsion work, generator or air-conditioning maintenance, stabiliser servicing, safety-equipment renewal, electronics, cosmetic preparation, delivery and berthing arrangements.
A lower-priced motor yacht may remain attractive after planned work. A higher-priced yacht may represent better value when her condition, documentation and equipment reduce immediate expenditure.
