What International Buyers Should Budget Beyond the Purchase Price

The asking price is only one part of a yacht’s total acquisition and ownership cost. A credible budget should include transaction expenses, initial preparation, standing costs, operating expenditure and longer-term technical renewals.

Two yachts purchased for a similar price may have substantially different ownership costs. Yacht size, displacement, machinery, technical complexity, location, crewing and intended use are often more relevant than purchase price alone.

How Much Does It Cost to Own a Yacht in Greece?

There is no reliable universal percentage.

A smaller yacht used privately for several weeks each year has a different cost profile from a larger yacht with permanent crew, multiple engines, generators, stabilisers and extensive domestic systems.

Indicative figures without knowing the yacht’s dimensions, machinery, condition, location and intended use can be misleading. A meaningful budget should be prepared yacht by yacht using current quotations from marinas, insurers, technicians and other relevant providers.

What Costs Arise When Buying a Yacht?

In addition to the agreed price, the acquisition budget may include:

  • Independent pre-purchase survey
  • Haul-out and sea-trial expenses
  • Specialist engine, rigging or systems inspections
  • Legal and documentation review
  • Registration or change-of-flag expenses
  • Tax or customs advice where required
  • Insurance arrangements
  • Delivery, relocation or transport
  • Work identified during due diligence

VAT should be considered separately. The available VAT documentation, intended ownership and proposed transaction should be independently reviewed before the final acquisition budget is established.

For further guidance, read EU VAT Status When Buying a Yacht in Greece.

Why Can the First Year Cost More?

The first year may include expenditure that does not recur annually.

The buyer may need to address survey findings, complete overdue servicing, renew safety equipment or undertake selected upgrades. Registration, delivery and initial preparation can also increase the first-year budget.

The relevant comparison between yachts is therefore:

Purchase price plus transaction expenses plus the expenditure required to bring the yacht to the buyer’s intended standard.

A lower-priced yacht requiring extensive work may cost more initially than a better-prepared alternative.

What Are the Main Ownership Cost Categories?

Standing costs

These arise whether the yacht is used frequently or not:

  • Marina berth or mooring
  • Insurance
  • Registration and administration
  • Management or accounting where required
  • Permanent crew, where applicable

Operating costs

These depend mainly on the yacht’s cruising programme:

  • Fuel and lubricants
  • Consumables and provisioning
  • Temporary berthing and port charges
  • Guest-related consumables, tender use and recreational equipment
  • Seasonal travel and technical support

Technical and renewal costs

These support reliability, safety and future marketability:

  • Scheduled machinery servicing
  • Periodic haul-out and underwater maintenance
  • Antifouling and anode replacement
  • Batteries, pumps and domestic systems
  • Sails, rigging and deck equipment
  • Tender and safety-equipment maintenance
  • Repairs and periodic equipment replacement

A yacht’s systems and complexity can influence expenditure more than its age. Large engines, generators, stabilisers, hydraulics, extensive teak and permanent crew requirements can materially change the ownership profile.

Which Costs Are Specific to Greece?

Berthing costs vary by yacht dimensions, location, marina facilities, contract duration and season. Athens and fully serviced marinas may have a different cost profile from regional or seasonal moorings in the Aegean and Ionian.

Island-based yachts may incur additional travel, delivery and technical-support costs when specialist attendance or haul-out facilities are required.

Depending on the yacht, flag, use and time spent in Greek waters, applicable cruising, port or regulatory charges may also need to be considered. Current requirements should be confirmed with an appropriately qualified adviser.

Buyers should consider the intended home port, annual berth availability, winter arrangements, access to technical services and distance from their residence. A lower berthing price may not produce a lower overall cost if maintenance and access become more difficult.

How Should Buyers Compare Different Yachts?

For each shortlisted yacht, buyers should consider:

  • Technical complexity and equipment
  • Maintenance and operating history
  • Survey findings and immediate requirements
  • VAT and registration position
  • Berthing and crewing requirements
  • Intended annual use
  • Delivery and preparation costs

Deferred maintenance should receive particular attention. Work postponed by a previous owner normally becomes part of the buyer’s initial budget and can affect reliability, enjoyment and future resale.

Ownership cost also has a capital dimension. Model demand, age, condition, maintenance records and future marketability can influence depreciation and eventual resale value.
