What International Buyers Should Verify Before Purchase
VAT status is an important consideration when purchasing a private or commercially operated yacht in Greece.
A yacht may be presented as EU VAT Paid, VAT Not Paid or VAT Status on Request. These descriptions should be considered together with the yacht’s ownership, operational history and the structure of the proposed transaction.
An EU VAT-paid yacht may be particularly relevant to a private buyer intending to keep and use the yacht within the European Union.
A yacht presented as VAT not paid may also represent an attractive acquisition where its price, intended use and transaction structure are appropriate for the buyer.
VAT not paid does not necessarily indicate a problem with the yacht. It may, however, affect the total acquisition cost, conditions of use within the EU, transaction structure and future resale market.
Available supporting information may include:
- Purchase or VAT invoices
- Importation or customs documents
- Commercial-use records
- Previous bills of sale
- Registration documents
- Evidence concerning previous private or commercial operation
The information available will vary between yachts, and certain documents may only be released at an appropriate stage of the transaction.
Registration, ownership, VAT and customs status are separate matters. An EU flag does not, by itself, prove that VAT has been paid. Equally, a yacht registered outside the EU may have a properly documented EU VAT position.
The VAT treatment of a proposed purchase may depend on the seller and buyer, the yacht’s location, its previous use and how it will be owned and operated after completion.
For an experienced buyer, the relevant question is not simply whether VAT has been paid. It is whether the yacht’s stated position is supported by the available documentation and is appropriate for the buyer’s intended use.
VAT status should be considered as part of the yacht’s overall acquisition profile—not as a measure of its condition or quality.
Before making an unconditional commitment, buyers should have the available documentation and proposed transaction reviewed by an appropriately qualified tax, customs or maritime-law professional.
