What International Buyers Should Consider Before Negotiating

Making a successful offer involves more than proposing a percentage below the asking price. The yacht’s market position, condition, maintenance history, equipment, VAT status, documentation and proposed transaction terms should all be considered.

Online listings show what sellers are asking—not necessarily the prices at which yachts are ultimately sold. Asking prices must also be assessed against condition, specification, location, operating history and comparable yachts available in Greece and the wider Mediterranean.

How Much Should I Offer for a Yacht?

There is no standard discount from a yacht’s asking price.

A well-maintained yacht offered at a realistic market price may leave limited room for negotiation. A yacht positioned above comparable vessels, requiring material expenditure or presenting documentation concerns may justify a different approach.

A long period on the market does not automatically mean that a seller will accept a substantial reduction. Similarly, recent upgrades can improve a yacht’s condition and marketability without necessarily increasing its value by the full cost of the work.

The strongest offers are based on the yacht’s overall acquisition profile—not an arbitrary percentage below the asking price.

What Should Be Assessed Before Making an Offer?

Before proposing a price, buyers should consider:

  • Comparable yachts currently offered in Greece and the Mediterranean
  • Maintenance history, engine hours and recent technical expenditure
  • Equipment, upgrades and inventory included in the sale
  • EU VAT status and available supporting documentation
  • Private, commercial or former-charter operating history
  • Anticipated survey findings and immediate maintenance requirements
  • The yacht’s location, inspection logistics and intended delivery point

Price should be evaluated together with condition, documentation, inventory and completion terms rather than as an isolated figure.

What Should a Yacht Offer Include?

The written offer or sale agreement commonly records:

  • The proposed purchase price and currency
  • The yacht and inventory included
  • The deposit arrangements
  • Survey, haul-out and sea-trial conditions
  • Any documentation, finance or registration conditions
  • The intended completion date and delivery location
  • The period for which the offer remains open

The deposit arrangements should clearly explain how the funds will be held, released or returned. The applicable sale agreement will determine the parties’ rights and obligations throughout the transaction.

A clearly funded proposal, reasonable conditions and a realistic completion timetable can be as important to a seller as the price itself.

Should the Offer Be Subject to Survey?

For a pre-owned yacht, the offer will commonly be subject to an independent pre-purchase survey, haul-out and sea trial.

The agreement should establish what happens if material defects are identified. Normal wear, cosmetic observations and condition consistent with the yacht’s age should not automatically be treated in the same way as significant structural, mechanical or safety-related findings.

When the yacht is located on a Greek island or operating commercially, survey dates, travelift availability and existing commitments may require advance coordination.

What Else Should an International Buyer Consider?

Before completion, appropriate professional advisers should review the yacht’s ownership, authority to sell, registration, VAT documentation and any recorded mortgages or encumbrances relevant to the transaction.

Foreign buyers should also consider their intended ownership structure, flag, insurance arrangements and delivery plans before contractual deadlines are agreed. These matters may involve more than one jurisdiction and should not be left until the final stages of the purchase.

How Alvea Yachts Manages Offers

For yachts centrally listed by Alvea Yachts, we act on the seller’s instructions, present offers, manage negotiations and coordinate the practical stages of the transaction.

Where Alvea Yachts is separately appointed to represent a buyer, we may assist with market assessment, yacht selection and negotiations involving suitable yachts offered through other brokers. The scope of any buyer-representation appointment should be agreed before an offer is submitted.

The objective is to establish commercially workable terms that reflect the yacht’s condition, documentation, market position and overall acquisition value.

This guide provides general brokerage information and does not constitute legal, tax, customs or financial advice. Buyers should obtain independent professional advice appropriate to the yacht, ownership structure and proposed transaction.
